Create and manage maps
Create and manage maps
What it is
A map (blueprint) is the canvas where you place your racks. You can keep as many maps as you need — one per building floor or per room is typical. All map actions live in the left sidebar and require an admin account.
How to create a map
- Open Blueprints from the main menu.
- Click New next to the Open Map selector (or Create New Map on the empty screen).
- Type a descriptive name, e.g. “Floor 2 - Main Server Room”.
- The new empty map opens in the editor.
To switch between maps, use the Open Map dropdown. The editor remembers your last map and reopens it next time.
How to set a background image
The background is the floor plan image you work on top of.
- In the Background section, click Import.
- Pick an image file (PNG or JPG). PDF and DWG are not accepted — export them to PNG or JPG first.
- The image appears behind the canvas and the view fits to it.
Adjust how it looks:
- Opacity slider — fades the image (default 50%) so racks and cables stand out.
- Show Background checkbox — hides the image without removing it.
- Delete — removes the background image from the map. Racks and drawings stay.
Tips for the image: use 2000-3000 px wide for good quality without lag, and prefer light backgrounds with dark lines.
How saving works
Changes save automatically as you work — moving racks, drawing, and uploading the background all persist on their own (you see an auto-save toast). The Save button forces an extra confirmation save if you want peace of mind before closing.
How to copy a map
Two equivalent ways:
- Save As — opens a dialog, suggests “current name (Copy)”, then click Create Copy.
- Clone Map — asks for a name in a prompt and duplicates immediately.
Both copy the full map: background, rack placements, and annotations. You are redirected to the new copy.
Copying also works for Rooms — the copy keeps its Room mode and the rows placed on the floor plan. Rows can’t be copied from here: a Row’s racks live in the Row itself, so copying the container would share the racks instead of duplicating them. To duplicate racks of a Row, use the Clone button under each rack on the Row page.
How to delete a map
- Click Delete in the Actions section.
- Confirm the warning.
The map goes to the trash and can be restored. Racks placed only on that map are moved to the trash with it; racks that also appear on other maps are kept.
What is recorded in the audit trail
Creating a map, row or room, saving its settings, copying it, deleting it, replacing or removing its background, and starting an Auto-Plan import are recorded in System Logs (category BLUEPRINT), with who did it. The editor’s automatic saving (annotations, positions) is not recorded. See [[crearack—settings—system-logs]].
Troubleshooting
- Import does nothing or fails — check the file is a real image (PNG/JPG). Convert PDFs to PNG before uploading.
- Background looks too strong — lower the Opacity slider; the setting is saved per map.
- Deleted a map by mistake — restore it from the trash; the racks that went to the trash together with the map come back too. A rack you had sent to the trash separately (from the Rack Editor) stays there until you restore it yourself.
