Back up and restore the stencil library
What it is
The Backup button in the Rack Editor Library panel exports your whole stencil library to a single ZIP file. The ZIP contains:
- One image per stencil, organized in folders by category
- A
manifest.jsonwith each stencil’s name, category, and U height
The export covers all libraries visible to you — your custom stencils and the built-in global ones. Restoring the ZIP recreates the stencils as custom stencils owned by your organization, so you can use it to migrate a library between organizations or as a safety net before bulk changes.
How to back up the library
- Open any rack in the Rack Editor and expand the Library panel (left side).
- Click Backup (tooltip: Backup all libraries to ZIP). The button shows Backing up… while the file is built.
- Your browser downloads
CreaRack-Pro_Library_Backup.zip.
Make a backup before importing new stencil packs or cleaning up categories.
How to restore from a backup
- In the Library panel, click Restore (tooltip: Restore libraries from ZIP) and select the backup ZIP.
- The Restore Library Backup dialog analyzes the file and lists every category it contains, with stencil counts. All categories start checked.
- Untick any category you do not want, then click Restore Selected.
- CreaRack imports the stencils and reloads the page so they show up in the library.
The two-step flow (analyze, then confirm) lets you review the contents before anything is written.
Automation via API
The same operations are available as REST endpoints:
GET /api/racks/library/backup # download the ZIP
POST /api/racks/library/restore/analyze # upload ZIP, get session_id + categories
POST /api/racks/library/restore/confirm # body: session_id + selected categories
Troubleshooting
- “Invalid backup - missing manifest.json” — the ZIP is not a CreaRack library backup. Only ZIPs produced by the Backup button (or the backup endpoint) can be restored.
- Duplicate stencils after restoring — restore always creates new stencils; it does not merge with existing ones. Restoring the same ZIP twice duplicates every stencil. Delete the extra category before restoring again.
- A category restored fewer stencils than expected — stencils whose image file is missing from the ZIP are skipped silently.
- Restored global stencils are now editable — expected. Everything you restore becomes a custom stencil owned by your organization.
