Network Tools

What they are

The Network Tools section in the Terminal page sidebar gives you three browser-based diagnostic tools: Health Check, Port Scanner, and Discovery. Each opens as a tab in the Terminal workspace, next to your SSH sessions.

All probes run through the Local Agent on your network — that is what lets a cloud app reach private IPs. The Agent must be installed and running; nothing else is needed.

A fourth button, Auto-Provision, sits in the same section but opens the full provisioning wizard instead — see [[crearack—network—auto-provision-wizard]].

How to use Health Check

Checks the reachability of every managed device in your sidebar device list, in one batch.

  1. Click Health Check. The tab shows a badge with your device count.
  2. Click SSH Check to test port 22 on all devices, or Ping All for a basic reachability test.

Results land in a table (Device, IP Address, Response/RTT) sorted offline-first, so problems float to the top. The status dots in the sidebar device list update at the same time. Results are kept locally and restored when you reopen the tab.

How to use Port Scanner

Two modes, switched with the buttons at the top:

  • Scan Ports — find open ports on a single target IP. Pick the port set: SSH (22), Quick (15) common ports, or All (~100).
  • Find Port — sweep an IP range for one specific port. Handy for “which machines expose SSH?”.

Enter the target (or pick one from the Saved dropdown), click Scan, and Stop if you need to abort. Frequently used targets can be saved with Save.

If the Local Agent fails to answer some of the requests it needs to complete the sweep, the result banner says “Results may be incomplete” with how many requests failed, instead of finishing silently as if every host had answered. Treat those results as partial — a “no open ports” reading on a host is not reliable if the Agent could not reach it.

How to use Discovery

A fast scan of an IP range to see what is alive on the network.

  1. Enter the start and end IPs of the range (or pick one from Saved Ranges).
  2. Click Discover for the full scan, or Rapid for a ping-only pass.

The full scan runs in phases: ICMP ping, ARP table read (adds MAC and vendor), TCP probing of hosts that ignore ping, a port scan of every live host, and hostname resolution. The results table shows IP, MAC, Vendor, Hostname, open Ports, a Web link when the device has a web interface, the detection Method (ICMP/ARP/TCP), and an SSH button that pre-fills a manual SSH connection to that IP.

Ranges are capped at 1024 addresses per scan. Results for the last 5 ranges are stored in your browser and restored on return, with an age indicator:

Restored: 11 devices (5m ago)

This is a diagnostic scan. For discovery with SNMP enrichment and rack assignment, use the Auto-Provision wizard.

If some requests to the Local Agent fail partway through a scan (for example the Agent drops offline for a moment), the results banner warns “Results may be incomplete” and shows how many requests failed — a scan that used to end in Complete even when the Agent had gone silent now tells you it might be missing devices, instead of showing what looks like an empty network.

Troubleshooting

  • “Check failed - verify agent connection” — the Local Agent is not running on this machine. Start it and retry.
  • “No devices configured” — Health Check only tests devices that appear in the Terminal sidebar, i.e. devices with Network Management enabled. See [[crearack—network—gestion-red]].
  • A device ignores ping but exists — run Discovery anyway: the ARP and TCP phases catch hosts that block ICMP.
  • Slow scans — lower the timeout or raise concurrency in the sidebar settings; both persist per browser.
  • “Results may be incomplete” after a scan — the Local Agent failed to answer some requests during the scan (it may have dropped offline briefly). Check the Agent is still running and re-run the scan for full coverage.
  • [[crearack—network—gestion-red]] — enable Network Management on devices
  • [[crearack—network—auto-provision-wizard]] — full discovery with provisioning
  • [[crearack—terminal—local-agent]] — the Agent that runs the probes
