Port mapping and cabling

What it is

The properties panel of a switch shows a per-port table: VLAN, speed, admin/oper status, mode (access/trunk), and description. CreaRack reads this live from the device via SNMP, with an SSH fallback for VLAN details. On top of the live data you can record desired values, compare them against the device, and document which cable goes where.

Credentials are never typed in or sent by the browser for any of this. SNMP communities and SSH credentials are stored server-side; when SSH runs through the Local Agent, the Agent fetches the credentials from the server by device ID.

How to read port config from the device

The port buttons appear when the device has a discovery profile (created by network discovery or Device Info).

  1. Select the device and click Refresh Ports in the properties panel.
  2. CreaRack reads the ports via SNMP first. If SNMP returns no VLANs, it supplements them over SSH through the Local Agent (commands like show interfaces status and show vlan brief, adapted per vendor).
  3. A toast confirms the result, e.g. “Read 24 ports + 4 SFP via SNMP”.

The Ports and SFP sections now show live data per port. Refresh SNMP re-scans the interface list, and Device Info opens the full discovery profile.

How to track desired changes and compare

  1. Click a port row to expand its detail.
  2. Enter the desired VLAN, description, speed, or mode. Edited rows are highlighted; this does not touch the device — it is your documented intent.
  3. Click Compare to open the diff modal. It summarizes ports as modified (desired differs from live), match, and manual only, with a field-by-field view.
  4. Use a port’s reset button to drop its desired overrides and fall back to live values.

Re-run Refresh Ports after changing the device to verify reality now matches intent.

How to document cabling (port connections)

  1. In the port table, free ports show an Assign button in the Device column.
  2. Click it to open the Port Connection modal.
  3. Pick the destination device and port, optionally the cable Type (Cat6, fiber, DAC…), Color, Length, and notes, then click Connect.

The connection appears as a clickable device name on both ends — click it to jump to the connected device, even in another rack. A port can hold only one connection; delete the existing one first to re-patch. Devices discovered on the network (profiles) can also be attached to switch ports, with auto-suggestions based on LLDP/CDP neighbor data.

How to export a cable report

Click Cable Report in the editor toolbar. A printable HTML report opens with every connection in the rack, including cable details and topology diagrams. A Markdown download is also available from the same report API.

Troubleshooting

“No port data returned”

  • The device needs either SNMP configured in its profile or SSH credentials in its Network Management config. Set one of them up and retry.

VLANs are empty after Refresh Ports

  • The SSH supplement needs the Local Agent running on your PC for private-IP devices.

“Port X is already assigned”

  • Each port accepts one connection. Remove the existing connection for that port first.
