What it is
SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) moves files securely over an SSH connection. The Terminal includes an SFTP sidebar — the FILES panel — that lets you browse the file system of the connected device, upload and download files, and edit text files in place. No separate FTP client needed.
The panel rides on your active SSH session: it uses the same connection and the same credentials, so there is nothing extra to log into. All transfers go through the Local Agent, the same bridge that powers the console.
Not every network device supports SFTP. Linux servers, firewalls and most enterprise switches do; low-end switches often expose only a CLI. If the panel returns an error on a device, fall back to
scportftpfrom the SSH console.
How to browse files
- Open an SSH session with the device.
- Press Files in the session toolbar. The FILES sidebar slides open and lists the session’s starting directory.
- Navigate:
- Double-click a folder to enter it.
- Double-click .. to go up one level.
- The path bar under the header shows where you are.
- Use Home to jump back to the starting directory and Refresh to reload the current one.
The list shows folders first (in green), then files, with name and size in the tooltip.
How to upload a file
- Navigate to the destination folder.
- Press Upload and pick the file in your operating system’s dialog.
- The file transfers to the device and the listing refreshes.
Typical uses: pushing firmware images, deploying prepared config files, copying scripts to a server.
How to download a file
Double-click any binary or unrecognized file and it downloads through your browser. Typical uses: pulling config backups, collecting log files for offline analysis.
How to edit a text file
Double-click a file with a text extension (txt, conf, cfg, log, py, js, sh, json, yaml, yml, md, html, css, xml) and it opens in the built-in editor:
- Edit the content in the modal.
- Press Save (or Ctrl+S) to write the changes back to the device.
- Press Close when done.
Be careful editing live configuration on production devices. Download a copy first so you can roll back.
Troubleshooting
- “No SSH Session” — the panel needs an active session. Connect to the device first, then press Files.
- Error on open — the device likely does not support SFTP. Use
scportftpfrom the console instead. - Upload or save fails — your SSH user may lack write permission on that directory. Reconnect with a more privileged account.
